Some of the most enduring stories--The Odyssey, Don Quixote, The Wizard of Oz--are those in which the central character embarks, willingly or not, on a journey. But you don’t have to be writing an epic saga to make effective use of the journey narrative format. Writers of short stories, personal essays, memoirs and even literary journalism can gain insight into their stories and their characters by understanding the basic elements of the journey story.
Drawing on the work of Joseph Campbell, contemporary fiction and nonfictions writers, and film clips, this class will help students develop their own stories by understanding the elements of typical journey narratives.
This class is not a workshop, but there will be plenty of freewriting exercises and home assignments to help you with your story.
