Title:
Breaking in with the small stuff -- Writing for the Front and Back of Magazines

Cost:
$95.00

Description:

Sure, we are all ready with that 6,000-word personal essay, that two-years-of-reporting investigational piece. But to break in, it's usually best to establish respect with the magazine's editorial staff by writing front-of-the-book and back-of-the-book pieces -- the 300-600-word variety. We'll take a look at local magazines and newspapers and talk about how to break in with the small stuff, how to look in both your life and your community and find something unique to offer. We'll look at how to shape ideas based on the space and departments available -- what do they normally publish, and how can we creatively fit within their typical mold? We'll also talk about not just the story but the pitch for your story, the way to make your case into the magazine -- and a good set of training wheels for your novel's query letter. Jennie has written such pieces for 5280, Better Homes and Gardens, Field and Stream, Dining Out, Delicious Living, Draft, the Rocky Mountain News, the Daily Camera, dirt, Colorado Biz Magazine, and the Boulder County Business Report.
