Title:
Creative Food Writing: One Dish at a Time

Cost:
$95.00

Description:

This one-day workshop is designed to help writers craft delectable prose that enables their readers to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the culinary experience. Beginning with a discussion of effective structure and approaches to food writing, Clay Fong and Joey Porcelli will also analyze the work of authors such as A.J. Liebling and M.F.K. Fisher, identify helpful research resources, and address the ups and downs of professional writing for restaurant reviews and dining guides.  For lunch, participants will visit a local restaurant and sample a variety of foods.

The afternoon will be spent reviewing the meal, writing in-class exercises and exchanging constructive feedback. By day's end, participants should have a better understanding of the structure of memorable food writing, as well as a means of finding their culinary voice. Both experienced and inexperienced writers welcome.

Award-winning author Joey Porcelli’s love of food is the natural result of her Italian heritage.  Her Grandma Rosie demonstrated the finer points of the perfect marinara and how to deep fry yard greens in olive oil and garlic. Porcelli’s first book, Rise & Dine: Breakfast in Denver & Boulder has become a national series and appeared on The Denver Post’s nonfiction bestseller list soon after publication as did her second book, the Gyros’ Journey, co-authored with Clay Fong.  Porcelli writes feature articles for magazines and newspapers, teaches creative writing classes at the Arvada Center for the Arts and is a screenwriter. She is co-author of a history of the Denver International Film Festival to be published in October 2007. Clay Fong is lifelong foodie who was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area. As a preteen, he remembers reading Ruth Reichl's first restaurant criticisms in New West Magazine and having his parents buy him ice cream cones in Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto. Co-author of the Gyros Journey: Affordable Ethnic Eateries along the Front Range with Joey Porcelli, Clay is also the restaurant critic for the Boulder Weekly. Besides writing about food, Clay is a screenwriter who has written Chickflick: The Miracle Mike Story, and co-written Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water, both directed by Lighthouse's own Alexandre Philippe.
