Announcing Our Next Visiting Author: Hilton Als

Guggenheim Fellow recipient and Langston Hughes Medal recipient has across decades blazed a trail of fearless criticism that interweaves his own family history and personal identity with a critical and incisive eye towards the arts of his time

DENVER, January 7, 2022—Hilton Als, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and critic for The New Yorker magazine, will be in conversation on Thursday, February 10, 2022 as part of Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design's Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer Program and Lighthouse Writers Workshop Visiting Author series. Tickets for each event are available for purchase at lighthousewriters.org.

Events include:
Coffee and Craft with Hilton Als, where Lighthouse instructor and graphic novelist R. Alan Brooks (The Burning Metronome and Anguish Garden) will join Hilton Als for a morning session in conversation as they discuss Hilton’s work, writing process, and answer live audience questions. In Focus with Hilton Als, features the author, critic, and curator in an explorative and interactive session where he’ll take a focused look at the fortitude required to protect the artistic voice while critically engaging with contemporary culture. About Hilton Als
Hilton Als began contributing to The New Yorker in 1989, writing pieces for ‘The Talk of the Town,’ he became a staff writer in 1994, a theatre critic in 2002, and lead theater critic in 2012. He is currently working on a new book titled I Don’t Remember (Penguin, 2023), a book-length essay on his experiences in AIDS era New York. In 2016, he received the Lambda Literary’s Trustee Award for Excellence in Literature, as well as the Windham Campbell Prize for Nonfiction. In 2017, Als won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and in 2018 the Langston Hughes Medal. In 2020, he was named an inaugural Presidential Visiting Scholar at Princeton University for the 2020-21 academic year. In 2021, he was voted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 

About R. Alan Brooks
R. Alan Brooks is an educator and the author of The Burning Metronome and Anguish Garden, graphic novels featuring social commentary. His award-winning weekly comic is featured in The Colorado Sun and he gave a TED Talk on the importance of art. He hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s “How Art Is Born” podcast, as well as his own “MotherF**ker In A Cape” comics podcast.
