Meet the Artists for Making the Mountain

by Corey Dahl

Every artist has a story. That’s Making the Mountain’s tagline, and it’s also just a fact. For the next Making the Mountain on March 4, we’ve rounded up three artists with stories that will surprise and inspire you.

Alexandre Philippe is a filmmaker whose credits include Doc of the Dead, The Life and Times of Paul the Psychic Octopus, and The People vs. George Lucas. Jennifer Louise Tillery spent nine years designing costumes for film and television and now co-owns the online vintage boutique Vauxshop.com. And Jolt is a graffiti writer and fine artist whose work can be seen on and in buildings throughout Denver.

I recently got a sneak peek at what our presenters will be talking about. Check out their answers, and don’t forget to RSVP for Making the Mountain here.

Q. What's a surprising piece of equipment that you use for your craft?

Alexandre: I’m old-school, and still use Microsoft Word to write screenplays, instead of
Final Draft. Word forces me to actively think about the interplay between formatting and style as I write.

Jennifer: Stylists always use the oddest things to perfect the way clothing looks on models. Rubber bands, safety pins, binder clips, and double sided tape are my tried-and-true favorites.

Jolt: I just go through a lot of spray paint, it's real simple.

Q. Does your work affect your body in weird ways? Is there any way someone could look at you and know what you do?

Alexandre: My eyes light up when I talk about cinema, and I pretty much wear my heart on my sleeve. Talk to me about Hitchcock, and my body language will change in an instant.

Jennifer: Because hand sewing can often be such micro-level work, I often find myself hunching over a garment and squinting. It's unfortunately the same stance I take when I'm working at the computer.

Jolt: Painting all day, even with a mask, my lungs feel like I've been breathing some shit that's bad for me.

Q. In one sentence, what do you love about your work?

Alexandre: I’m most passionate about shedding new light on key aspects of pop culture and cinema, and nothing brings me more joy than deconstructing the nuances of the iconic shower scene in Psycho.

Jennifer: I love when we find a dress a woman wore in the 1960s, a dress she felt strong and confident in, and we're able to sell it to a woman in 2016 who is going to feel that same sense of satisfaction when she wears it.

Jolt: The ability to express myself is number one.

Making the Mountain starts at 6 PM, March 4, at Lighthouse Writers Workshop. RSVP on Facebook or get your free ticket by clicking here.
