Community Outreach

Lighthouse hosts free, collaborative, community outreach programs throughout Denver and beyond. Our mission is to get people writing and to then share those stories in surprising, joyful ways. We want everyone to know that their story counts and that it’s worthy of being shared.

Community outreach programs include:

  • Hard Times Writing Workshop at the Denver Public Library & Arvada Public Library, for writers experiencing homelessness or difficult times (find articles about the program at the Denver Voice)
  • Writing to Be Free workshops for people transitioning out of incarceration (read the instructor's blog post)
  • The Write Age writing workshops for seniors, in conjunction with Denver Parks (watch a short video)
  • Workshops for refugees at Emily Griffith School, in collaboration with Picture Me Here
  • Art installations, including parking signs around Denver
  • The Gathering Place workshops for women, children, and transgender individuals who are experiencing poverty or homelessness
  • Writing workshops in collaboration with UC Health, for those with cancer diagnoses and their caregivers
  • Veteran's Writing Workshops in collaboration with the Office of Veteran's Affairs
  • Denver Voice writing workshops for vendors (people experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Denver metro area)
  • Fort Lyon Writer-in-Residence program, which brings hands-on writing instruction to homeless veterans
  • Youth outreach, supporting writing instruction for kids and teens in public housing projects and low-income school

Write Denver brings its signature Poetrees and word tiles (Word on the Street) to local festivals and events. Visit writedenver.org for details on where we'll be next, and come say hello!
