Julian Rubinstein is an award-winning journalist, educator, and documentary producer. His first book, Ballad of the Whiskey Robber, was a New York Times “Editors' Choice,” a finalist for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Fact Crime, and the winner of Borders “Original Voices” Nonfiction Book of the Year. His magazine work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Travel & Leisure and others, and collected in Best American Essays, Best American Crime Writing, Best American Science and Nature Writing, and Best American Sports Writing. His forthcoming book and documentary film, The Holly, follows a gang shooting case in Northeast Denver. He was born in the Bronx and grew up in Denver, where he lives now.
