Azar Kohzadi is an award-winning teacher and writer, operating as co-director of the Creative Writing Department at Denver School of the Arts (DSA) for the past eight years. Throughout her time at DSA, Azar has developed creative writing curriculum in all genres for Denver Public Schools and has co-produced and directed a number of interdisciplinary performances and creative projects. For 15 years, she’s taught poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and screenwriting to students of diverse communities and ages, in numerous countries, and contexts.

Beyond the classroom, Azar leads travel-writing excursions, site-based writing workshops, as well as writing retreats. For the past four years, she’s led mindful writing retreats in connection with years of research and development into the intersections between mindfulness, meditation, and writing practice.

Azar writes in all genres and has published work in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction in a number of publications, including The Sun. Currently she is working on a book of prose poetry constellating around her experience growing up in the Midwest during the Iran-Iraq war, as well as a book on mindful writing practice in the classroom.
