4-Week: Deep Dive into Perspective

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

Craft books will tell you that choosing the right point of view is the most important part of the writing process. But how do you know which point of view is “right”? And how do you take full advantage of it? In this workshop, we’ll examine how perspective intersects with character, pacing, and plot, and look at writers who've used it to dazzling effect. Discussion will include all available points-of-view, psychic distance, switching POV, unreliable narration, and the infamous author-narrator-character merge. Reading will include the texts listed below and additional readings from Virginia Woolf, Rachel Cusk, Edward P. Jones, Saul Bellow, and Tommy Orange.

Required Texts:*

The Art of Perspective, by Chris Castellani
We the Animals, by Justin Torres

*Copies of these books are available to Lighthouse students at a 10% discount at the Tattered Cover on Colfax. Simply tell a Tattered Cover employee you are enrolled in a course at Lighthouse and they will direct you to where the books are shelved.

Please note that our 4-week workshops do not include formal critiques, though there may be opportunities for informal sharing. If you’d like your work critiqued in depth, please see the 8-week workshop listings.
