4-Week: On Dialogue—Conversation, Speech, and Narrative in Prose

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

This four-week, generative class will explore the nuances, variations, and technical applications of dialogue in prose. Together, we will discuss prose works that demonstrate myriad styles of in-scene, dialogic interaction in order to acquaint ourselves with the complexities of conversation in fiction. In-class and out-of-class writing exercises will encourage students to consider and reconsider their individual approaches to writing dialogue. Excerpted works by Kazuo Ishiguro, Padgett Powell, Grace Paley, Renee Gladman, Toni Morrison, Evan S. Connell, Donald Barthelme, Diane Williams, and others will guide us toward a fuller understanding of human interaction, speech, [mis]communication, scene, and character development.
