Nothing compares to the curiosity-driven, quick turnaround style of magazine writing, be it longform journalistic stories or personal essays. Pick a publication, pitch your essay, or a story on a subject you'd like to explore, nab an assignment, and get going. Work with a great editor, enlighten readers, soak in their feedback, and start the cycle again. But for a beginner, learning HOW to do all of this can seem bewildering. In this class, students will spend four weeks with National Magazine Award winning journalist Tracy Ross breaking down all of the elements of magazine writing. Students will learn the fundamentals of pitching, reporting, writing, and editing. Our end goal: To gain a solid understanding of the magazine writing process, and to discover a story idea suitable for pitching a specific publication.

Lighthouse North Directions and Parking

From Highway 36, take the McCaslin exit, and immediately follow signs for McCaslin North. At the fourth light, turn left (west) onto Century Drive (there's a Walgreens on the NW corner). Take your first left (daycare on that corner). When the road Y's stay right, and when you get to the stop sign, it's the two story brick building on your right with a sign outside that says Office Evolution. Inside the building, follow the Lighthouse North signs to your conference room.

Parking is free and located around the building.
