4-Week: Reading as a Writer—The Lover

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

Writing somewhere between autobiography and fiction, memory and dream, desire and despair, Duras's 1985 seminal novella is at once a hazy, dreamlike trance of female adolescence, and a sharp, reserved meditation on family, colonization, and aging. Weaving these elements in sharp, compact sentences and lilting fragments, we will closely examine the structure of the novel, discovering what is contained in white space, the complicated relationships between memoir and memory and truth and honesty, and the visceral, immediate evocation of desire. Focusing on many elements of craft, including precision and economy of prose, unconventional structure, pacing, shifts in point-of-view and tense, and reliance on image, this course will guide participants through what is possible in between genres, and help to reshape what they believe they are able to do in their own work.

Required Text*: The Lover, Marguerite Duras
