4-Week: Reading as a Writer—Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

It’s been 20 years since the original publication of Tipping the Velvet, Sarah Waters' absorbing tale of a young oyster girl’s sexual awakening in Victorian England. Waters says her debut novel was “a romp and a romance” written from the “sunny part of my brain.” Widely acclaimed upon its release, it earned Waters a devoted following and was the first of six bestselling novels. In this four-week workshop, we’ll examine how Waters elevates sex, romance, and bawdy adventure into rich and compelling literature. We’ll talk about what makes her stories so appealing and we'll practice some of her techniques to make our own writing more seductive.

Please note that our 4-week workshops do not include formal critiques, though there may be opportunities for informal sharing. If you’d like your work critiqued in depth, please see the 8-week workshop listings.
