It’s hard to believe that Toni Morrison’s third novel, Song of Solomon, was published over 40 years ago. This powerful depiction of community and self, history and vengeance, origin and inheritance, remains fresh and relevant to this day. In Reading as a Writer: Song of Solomon, we’ll look at this 20thcentury masterpiece through both a microscopic and macroscopic lens in order to glean some of the lessons the novel holds for writers. We’ll examine its structure and voice. We’ll ponder how Morrison so deftly juggles multiple characters and narratives. We’ll study the book’s treatment of diction, syntax, POV, milieu, tension, plot, and motif. We’ll grapple with its thematic concerns and its relationship to its audience. And we’ll ask ourselves how all of these questions, techniques, and considerations can inform and enhance our own writing.
