4-Week: The Stagecraft of Dialogue

$215.00 Members
$240.00 Non-members

We’ve all read (and sadly, written) inert, static dialogue between bobble-heads proclaiming their opinions and feelings, and we tear our hair out trying to achieve the opposite: dynamic and naturally evolving conversation between multi-dimensional people. This class will delve into the art of dialogue with a theatrical/cinematic lens that will teach us to think of scenes in terms of staging, blocking, acting, lighting, and use of space and props. Using examples from prose, but also plays, screenplays, and graphic narrative, we will expand our dialogue skill, from the nitty-gritty of punctuation and capitalization to the bigger picture of propelling the story and developing characters. Class will consist of close-reading and group discussion, and some optional sharing of individual work. Fiction and nonfiction writers are welcome.
