4-Week: The Swing of the Sentence—How to Reinvigorate Your Prose

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

The acclaimed writer Don DeLillo says, “Every sentence has a truth waiting at the end of it and the writer learns how to know it when he finally gets there. On one level this truth is the swing of the sentence, the beat and poise, but down deeper it's the integrity of the writer as he matches with the language. I've always seen myself in sentences." In this class, we'll be considering sentences to the same focused details as DeLillo—syntax, diction, rhythm, sound, recursion, progression, punctuation, structure, etc. We'll read craft texts that address writing at the level of the sentence, we'll read contemporary writers who consider sentences to be the building blocks of their work, and we'll write our own low-stakes prose that will employ what we read, learn, and discuss in the four weeks. For prose writers of all skill levels. Come ready to experiment with words and find yourself in your sentences.

Please note that our four-week workshops do not include formal critiques, though there may be opportunities for informal sharing. If you’d like your work critiqued in depth, please see the 8-week workshop listings.
