4-Week: Writing Historical Fiction

$215.00 Members
$240.00 Non-members

History is not made up solely of big events; every day, in every place something interesting happens. Whether a rally in a small town in Nebraska 1965 or a church event in Queens in 1930, it’s the small things that happen under the umbrella of big historical events which give historical fiction its authenticity.

This class will look at how to insert our characters into a historical event, a historical landscape, and a historical culture. We’ll delve into how to research our settings, laying the groundwork of time and place that makes for engaging historical fiction. We’ll also practice finding hidden gems in photographs, art, and music that can bring authentic detail to our work.

In this four week class, there will be writing prompts to establish characters in time and place, reading discussions to examine craft, and an opportunity to share our work with the class on the last session. All you need to come with is a willingness to read, to research, to write, and to discuss.
