4-Week: Writing from Life—Autofiction, Autobiographical Fiction, Fictive Memoir

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

All fiction writers use reality to inform their work, just as all memoirists must impose the structures of fiction onto the untidy stuff of life. In this four-week class we'll work to locate the centers of our own stories, spin crisp and absorbing dialogue from remembered conversations, reanimate forgotten scenes, master the magic of what if, use theme and symbol as a way to discard the extraneous material of lived life, disguise real people or create composite characters, and find dramatic through-lines. We'll study excerpts from Sheila Heti, Rachel Cusk, Teju Cole; try some exercises, share work, and write closer to the bone than ever before.
