4-Week: Writing the Mother Wound

Many of us were taught that mothers are the holiest of holy, saints, altars we sacrifice ourselves to. But what about those of us who have had fraught relationships with our mothers; who had unsupportive or even abusive mothers?

This course is for everyone who has wanted to write about their strained relationships with their mothers, but don’t know how. It’s for those who find it difficult to dig into those memories, have dealt with backlash, called ungrateful. And it’s for anyone writing about any fraught family relationships, though our focus will be on mothers.

In this course, we’ll examine how writers navigate and approach the mother wound through their writing across the genres, using them as inspiration to write about our mother wounds. We’ll discuss how legacies of slavery, colonialism, immigration, genocide, and racism have shaped and exacerbated the mother wound for black and indigenous people of color, and we’ll privilege the work of BIPOC who have historically been left out of this conversation. We’ll leave knowing that while this kind of work can feel isolating, we’re not alone.
