This workshop is for advanced writers of short stories and longer fiction (chapters or novel sections). We’ll get to know each other first by sharing orally-performed folktales and quickly get into sharing and reviewing participants' work. Along the way, we’ll engage in writing exercises (in-class and on your own), read and discuss short stories by well-established writers, and discuss writing on craft.
Course materials may feature mostly straight-ahead literary fiction, but speculative, fantasy, and science fiction that is beyond the first draft is warmly welcomed.
Participants can expect to workshop two pieces of 5,000 words max and a workshop of a revised scene from one of your first submissions. We’ll also engage in peer-driven craft presentations of “model” stories, instructor-assigned readings, and online document sharing.
Prerequisite: As an advanced class, this course requires an application or instructor permission. If your application is accepted, you will receive a password to register for the class.
To apply: please submit the following to [email protected]: first three pages of a piece you will be working on in class; a bullet-point listing of your workshop history, writing accolades, publishing or other writerly successes; and an optional short blurb from another Lighthouse instructor.
