8-Week: Flash Fiction—The Short Short Story

Very short fiction plays by a dramatically different set of rules. Genre lines blur, success hinges on the precision of each word, stakes and momentum are fueled by syntax, humor and heartbreak coexist in the span of a line, image and voice reign. The study of very short stories is the study of precision, of calculated line editing, of economy, of understanding and capitalizing on voice, of exploiting and squashing ego. Here, structure is how a story fits on the page, how we move from one line to the next, how white space is used. In this course, we’ll be writing nearly a story (100-700 words each) per week, each with a specific prompt. At the end of the course, we'll turn our attention to polishing 2-3 shorts we find most successful. We’ll also do a crash course in literary magazine publishing; how to send your work out, and where, tuned specifically for this form. A foundation in the short story form is helpful, but not essential, however, the bulk of our time will not be devoted to the basic tenants of fiction, but rather a deeper understanding of how to create and engage with this specific form.
