8-Week: Novel CPR—Book Rescue for Frustrated Geniuses (Zoom)

$325.00 Members
$355.00 Non-members

Is your novel a hot mess? Are you experiencing a crisis of confidence? Did the crows eat your breadcrumb trail out of the German forest? Do your friends or relatives roll their eyes when your book is mentioned or politely say, “Oh, you’re still working on that project?”

Do you dream you left your baby in the freezer? Then this class is for you.

This is a class for desperate folks who are profoundly stuck in the middle, or who are attempting to connect a puzzle of broken fragments they are uncertain will ever join, or who are sewing the legs back on their monsters. We’ll look at concrete craft techniques like retro-outlining, redistributing your darlings, Oelipo, short-shorts, sprints, healthy plagiarism, and triage; as well as exploring more woo woo avenues, such as meditation and shamanisma-based synopsis. We’ll discuss ways to cope with creative wounds, amygdala hijack, boredom, block, the idea factory that won’t close, and book-sabotage. We’ll attempt to identify your unique core issues, brainstorm hacks and models, and restore your faith to continue.

This class presumes you have done traditional workshopping—and you’re still stuck. We’ll share synopsis and scenes from our novels but won’t be traditionally critiquing. In- and out-of-class exercises are the heart of this course. Our goal is to rescue your writing process from fear, doubt, and perfectionism, and to leave you with a bag of tools to help you move forward with courage and, occasionally, joy. Let’s resuscitate your baby!
