8-Week: Style, Voice, Imitation, and Theft (Denver)

$340.00 Members
$370.00 Non-members

In this course, we'll critically look at the way we borrow, steal, and imitate based on our admiration of what we read. We do it unconsciously all the time, but here, we want to actively look at what we see a writer doing well, what we admire, what we hope to achieve in our own work, and actively attempt to imitate and incorporate those elements. During these weeks we'll be reading a wide variety of writers—Grace Paley and Ocean Vuong, Truman Capote and Amy Hempel, George Saunders, and more—all writers primarily from the last century, but perhaps smatterings of others as well.

We'll be reading them on a micro level, examining their signatures, decoding, and deciphering to understand not only how these writers use their specific style, but to what effect. Each week you'll be writing imitations, 1-3 pages (though we encourage you to keep going when something is working), not to see how closely you can replicate what we've read, but how you can incorporate the stylistic signatures, command of voice, and experimentation with structure that you find admirable, enviable, into your own work.

Our goal for the course is to ultimately unlock your own signatures, your own style, and a voice that, thanks to a greater understanding of the voices of others, is singularly your own.

Please note: The feedback in this class is not the traditional written critique of a workshop, rather first blush critique on the spot to see how our invocations hold our own voice.
