8-Week: Time is on Your Side—Writing the Memoir

$340.00 Members
$370.00 Non-members

The narrative arc in memoir is crucial. It is the driving force of your story. How do we arrange the events in our memoir? In this course, we'll deeply explore narrative structure and time in nonfiction. If the only structural tool we have is "and then," even the most powerful material can get bogged down in a monotonous recitation. On the other hand, if our memoir time-jumps and leaps without signposts for the reader, the potency of our story is lost. As writers, we know the essence of our tale, but are often unclear about what has actually emerged on the page.

Every compelling memoir has a unique chronology that allows the richness of the writer's voice to fully emerge and gives the reader entree into the heart of the story. Whether participants are just starting out or have a finished draft of their memoir in hand, the discovery or deepening of knowledge about that chronology will illuminate the work and provide essential tools that will energize and surprise. Please note that this is a generative class, where we'll share our work when we'd like to first-blush feedback, but we won't be doing the traditional written critique.
