8-Week: Writing Children's Picture Books—Getting Started

Writing Children's Picture Books--Getting Started

In this hands-on workshop with children’s book author Denise Vega, you do not need to have a story already written. We’ll use the first two weeks to develop and complete a story through brainstorming and writing prompts.

In the remaining six weeks, we’ll explore various aspects of writing the picture book through workshopping and discussing the stories written in the first two weeks (or a different story if you have one—your choice). During the workshop sessions, we’ll look at a variety of picture book aspects, including:

  • Beginnings and endings
  • Characters (where applicable)
  • Structure
  • Illustration potential/role in your story
  • Use of the language tools at our disposal including rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and more.

The bulk of these eight weeks will be devoted to giving and receiving feedback on your own and others’ picture book manuscripts, during which we will explore the topics above. Feedback is one of the best ways to discover what is and isn’t working in your story and explore ways to strengthen it. We’ll cover tips for giving good feedback and how to receive and sort through feedback you’ve received.
