The Book Project Alumni Getaway

$75.00 Members
$75.00 Non-members

This weekend getaway, limited to Book Project graduates, includes three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at the historic Hand Hotel in Fairplay, Colorado, two classes with Book Project publishing expert Shana Kelly, and time for writing, thinking, reading, and sharing work with your fellow Book Project graduates. The Hand has great mountain views and plenty of space for laptops, notebooks, and lounging by the fireplace. Shana Kelly will be on hand to help coordinate meals and social activities.

Shana Kelly will be teaching two hour-long classes:

  • Saturday Morning: Meeting with Agents—In this class, students will receive guidance on how to research agents, and how to determine which ones are right for them. If students have scheduled meetings with agents or editors at LitFest, there will be info available on these people. Shana will give advice on how to find comps and write a strong query letter, and lead a discussion about in-person meetings -- why they are important, how to handle a meeting that has gone wrong, what to ask, etc.
  • Sunday Morning: Submission Strategies—This session will cover common questions from writers who have either started submitting or are about to: How do you know when it is time to submit your book? How do you get an agent's attention? Can you re-submit to agents who previously passed? How do you handle interest from an agent or multiple agents? How do you know when it is time to consider other publication options?

Food, lodging, and transportation are the responsibility of the attendees. Activities start with a group dinner on Friday, with other meals out-and-about in Fairplay and Alma, and readings and discussions by the fire on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. If you’re staying at the Hand, breakfast is included. Those staying off-site can purchase breakfast in advance for $8/day.

To join the Getaway, follow these steps:

  1. If you are a graduate of the Book Project, sign up here to reserve your spot. The weekend is limited to 20 participants.
  2. Once you receive confirmation of your registration, call the Hand Hotel directly to reserve and pay for your room: (719) 836-3595. Say you’re with Lighthouse. Registration via the Lighthouse website alone does not register you for a room.

If the Hand Hotel is full, there are other local lodging options: the Riverside Inn Travelodge in Fairplay; the Treeline Hostel in Alma; and Airbnb or VRBO in the Fairplay/Alma areas.

Room sharing and carpooling encouraged!

Note: The $75 fee for the weekend does not include the cost of lodging and meals, which are the responsibility of the participants.
