Invention As a Form of Inheritance: In this lecture, visiting novelist Idra Novey will speak about material and conjured legacies, how both can shape a writer’s life. She will talk about the scrapyard her namesake started over a century ago in Appalachia, which she didn’t visit until adulthood, and the figurative scrapyard she’s made of it in her mind, as a novelist. Writers will be invited to consider the potential upsides of inheriting nothing fixed or physical, of having the freedom to invent one’s own legacy through art and language instead.
