Daily Zoom: Writing About Friends

Few writers focus on friendship, yet, unlike relatives, friends are in our lives by choice and remain there for pleasure. We fall for some at first sight, tell them our secrets, and enjoy quirky pursuits. Because we owe them nothing, friends can know us better, or differently, than parents, siblings, children, or spouses. Some friends last our entire lives; others disappear when we move, change, or grow. And whereas the beginning of friendships can be ecstatic, full of love, the ends are often conflicted—the stuff good writing is made of. In this workshop we'll discuss the role of friends in others’ works and do exercises to put us in touch with the literary potential of these relationships.
