The Lyrical Line and the Memoirist’s Toolkit (Zoom)

As memoirists, part of our job is to remember as hard as we can how the events of our life unfolded. And yet, so often memories that feel fully formed, when examined, are more like grainy photographs with half the picture cut out. How do we patch together what we know to be the facts of our lives with the grainy photograph that represents the way we feel about it; our lived experience? Enter lyricism, the older cousin to today’s more popular––for lack of a better term––direct prose. In this workshop, we’ll look at how a few masters of the lyrical line use a smattering of remembered, concrete details to tell a truth about their experience, character, and perception of the world. As Sven Birkerts writes, those memoirists expressing “in the lyrical mode” do so “not because a certain subtle or rich musicality of prose is pleasing, but because the re-creation of the kinds of sensations and accompanying states of consciousness they are after requires it.”
