Poetics: Why We Write and Read Poetry

$120.00 Members
$140.00 Non-members

This class will look at essays by contemporary poets as a means of exploring the whys/hows/whos of our own writing practices. People have been arguing for centuries about what poetry does and why it is important. Does the poet have special genius? Should poems be beautiful? Political? Mystical? How do our ideas about poetry influence the poems we actually write? This workshop will read some recent essays and then try to “translate” the authors’ ideas into our own poems. Or maybe we’ll just come up with our own manifesto and revolutionize poetry (again)! Instructor will provide materials.
