Continuing our poets in translation series, we’ll explore the work of Rainer Marie Rilke and Osip Mandelstam. Rilke, writing in German and French, is a master of metaphor and has been translated by Galway Kinnel, David Young, Stephen Mitchell, and others. Mandelstam wrote in Russian and is a lyrical, yet political, poet writing at the same time as Akhmatova and Tsvetaeva. Joseph Brodsky called him “Russia’s greatest poet.” Through reading, discussion, and comparison, we will dig deeper into these great poets’ work as well as the function, limitations, and possibilities of language itself.
