Queer Creatives Retreat Seminar: (Re)Claiming Queer/Trans Bodies (Zoom)

$65.00 Members
$65.00 Non-members

In the anthology Fat and Queer, Tiff Joshua TJ Ferentini writes about how coming out can make you feel as if you are on display, especially “for those [of us] existing along the gender nonbinary or transgender spectrum […] Each crack in your voice, change in your mannerisms, cut of your hair, and change of your clothes is put under a microscope. Because, whether you want to be or not, you’re being put into a box, your gender identity and expression on display for all to see—or choose not to see.”

Ferentini’s words pinpoint why it can be difficult to fully render, to fully embody characters on the page. In this craft seminar, the work of writers like adrienne maree brown, Kacen Callender, Andrea Lawlor, Akwaeke Emezi, and others, will be our starting point for developing our own tools to (re)claim queer/trans bodies on the page. You’ll leave the craft seminar with new methods and ideas to apply to works-in-progress and/or new pieces. Although this session is geared toward fiction writers, all writers are welcome.

This workshop is part of the Queer Creatives Retreat and is open to writers of all genres and creatives of all types who identify as members of LGBTQIA+ communities. We also welcome folks who are questioning their gender or sexual orientation and are in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ communities. Please understand that our intention is to center LGBTQIA+ people at the retreat.
