Spec Fest: The New Wave in Horror Fiction

$55.00 Members
$65.00 Non-members

Are you a horror fiction aficionado? Did you like King and Koontz as a kid, and now you’re coming back around with Jones and Moreno-Garcia? In this class, we’ll talk about the basic history of horror fiction beginning with Poe and ending with what’s happening right now. We’ll explore horror as a subgenre of speculative literature—define what ultimately makes it what it is, talk about its different intersections (like the difference between magical realism and speculative, commercial horror and literary), and ultimately about what’s so appealing about a genre that scares the pants off of grown adults. We’ll also do a few fiction writing exercises designed to help you explore new possibilities for your own work within this hair-raising genre.

This course is part of Spec Fest, a weekend-long celebration of all things speculative fiction. Each seminar is available to à la carte, or as part of our Craft Seminar Four-Pack. Check out the whole festival here.
