Writing the Duplicate Mind: Poetry and the Work of Profound Imitation

$65.00 Members

When imitation is too easily dismissed as a writing exercise for novices, we exclude ourselves from one of the oldest and most complex cares poetry bears. Here imitation isn’t mere likeness, it is entrance and initiation; here imitation isn’t copying, but learning to think. In short excerpts from widely varied readings—ranging from ancient philosophy to Romantic poetry and theory, from Transcendental literature to contemporary practices—we’ll work to recover the thrill of being in thrall to other forms. Writing exercises throughout our hours together will work to open up avenues on the page that will continue to exert their power long past the class is over.
