Writing the unlikeable woman (or girl) has finally become fairly trendy in recent literary and other pop culture successes—think Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Sharp Objects. This seminar examines how to deepen female characters to move further into their imperfections and away from tropes by examining representations of the unlikeable woman/girl in lesser-known work, including excerpts from the novels Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh, Hotel Splendide by Marie Redonnet, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. All genres are welcome.
