Work and precarity are central to a number of recent novels. In these books, work is not a matter of banality or boredom, but is instead a place of high stakes, high drama, and deep psychological pressure. The result is a collection of genre bending novels, ranging from Hilary Leichter’s Temporary to Raven Leilani’s Luster and Christine Smallwood’s The Life of the Mind. In this craft talk, we’ll look at some of these novels, as well as think about how to convey the texture of the workplace in fiction—from workplace behavior and language to hierarchy and power.
