The Writer's Studio

Throughout the year, Lighthouse brings acclaimed and up-and-coming writers to Denver for craft sessions, on-stage conversations, readings, Q&As, and other events. Books by the authors are available at all events, courtesy of the Tattered Cover.

Our next Writer's Studio guest is Julia Alvarez, as part of the the NEA Big Read, co-presented by the Newman Center. Julia Alvarez has written novels (How the García Girls Lost Their AccentsIn the Time of the Butterflies, ¡Yo!In the Name of SaloméSaving the World), collections of poems (HomecomingThe Other Side/ El Otro LadoThe Woman I Kept to Myself), nonfiction (Something to DeclareOnce Upon A Quinceañera, A Wedding in Haiti), and numerous books for young readers (including the Tía Lola Stories series, Before We Were Free, finding miraclesReturn to Sender and Where Do They Go?). A recipient of a 2013 National Medal of Arts, Alvarez is one of the founders of Border of Lights, a movement to promote peace and collaboration between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  

On Wednesday, November 6, Alvarez will read from her award-winning works and join author Kali Fajardo-Anstine on-stage to discuss their artistic processes and answer audience questions at the Newman Center. On Thursday, November 7, she will lead a craft talk at Lighthouse.
