Do you read poetry? I don't read poetry. I know nothing about poetry. But I'd like to learn. April is National Poetry Month and here at Lighthouse I am surrounded by people who read, write, and know a lot about poetry and poets. And they're always dropping knowledge so I figured I'd pick some of it up and share it out with you, gentle reader. So, in recognition of National Poetry Month, here's the scoop, the score, the skinny on some of our favorite Lighthousers' favorite poems and poets.
Kate Barrett, Program Assistant--“Ooh ooh, Bob Hicok! I choose Bob Hicok. Or “Those Winter Sundays,” by Robert Hayden. Maybe that’s unoriginal of me, but it gets me every time.”
Meg Nix, Youth Program Director--“Patricia’s Smith’s collection Blood Dazzler shook my bones, man.“
Dan Manzanares, Creative Curator--"The Force that Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower," by Dylan Thomas.
Andrea Dupree, Co-Founder/Program Director--“I fortunately married a poet, so I think I’ll pick him. Michael J. Henry’s poetry cycle in Intersection, a collaboration with choreographer Garrett Ammon at Ballet Nouveau Colorado, seem like both story and music to me. I also love “Haley’s Comet,” by Stanley Kunitz."
Michael J. Henry, Co-Founder/Executive Director--"I have two all-time faves that come to mind, kinda randomly: “What Work Is” by Philip Levine, and “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop. Though I could pick a thousand others."
