4-Week: How to Own a Short Story (Zoom)

$205.00 Members
$230.00 Non-members

Have you ever been completely bowled over by a piece of short fiction and wondered to yourself: how the heck did the writer do that? In this four-week class, we’ll put a single story under a high-powered microscope to find out exactly how it’s put together. What’s happening with the structure? How does the story transition between sections? How do the images and motifs work together and even intensify? How does the writer suggest different motivations for the story’s characters? You’ll not only come away from this class with a better understanding of the nuts and bolts of fiction, but you’ll also leave with a clear framework for how to look closely at and learn from the stories you love. Come prepared to read, annotate, discuss, and write.

Writers in this discussion based course can expect some in-class writing, required weekly exercises as homework, and deep reading of a short story. No workshop or critique is required.
