8-Week: Daytime Plotshop—A Workshop for Your Plot (Zoom)

$325.00 Members
$355.00 Non-members

Many of us have endlessly workshopped scenes from our novels. We’ve honed our scenery, our descriptions, our dialogue. But what if what is wrong with our book can’t be found in individual chapters? How can we string this collection of moments into a full and captivating novel?

In this class, we’ll do a deep dive into our own plotlines. We’ll discuss the mechanics and nuance of plot, various narrative structures and how they each serve plot in their own way, and the intersection of character arc and plot arc. We’ll evaluate what we’ve got, find the holes and work to fill them, locate what is extraneous and excise it. We’ll do in-class writing exercises designed to help deepen and complicate plotlines as well as weave the character and plot arc together more effectively.

Class will be a combination of lecture, discussion, in class writing exercises, and one-on-one meetings with the instructor to discuss the specifics of your plot, and group critiques of plot. While there is a workshop component to the class, we’ll be workshopping plot lines rather than pages of our novels. The goal of this class is to workshop overall structure rather than individual chapters.
