Poetry in a Time of War

While in exile from the Nazis in 1939, Bertolt Brecht wrote, "In the dark times / will there also be singing? / Yes, there will also be singing. / About the dark times." We will investigate why poetry matters during such egregious times of war. We will read and think through iconic poems written during war times such as this piece by Brecht as well as work by Kamau Brathwaite, Etel Adnan, and Anne Waldman, among others. We'll also write our own pieces while considering current worldly affairs.
